KEITH Morrison smashed a superb 146 as
Waringstown Seconds kept their title bid on
track against Bangor on Saturday.
Even though it was a dull day, those present
at The Lawn were treated to a good contest
and, with Waringstown batting first, the
dullness was lifted by a run feast with
Keith Morrison and Andrew Cousins (87)
sharing a stand of 187 in the Waringstown
Innings of 287, one of the many 200+ totals
scored by the Seconds this year.
Although you would not have thought so,
conditions were tricky for the batsmen.
Losing captain Geoff Heyburn in the first
over, no further wickets fell until the 37th
over when Cousins was caught on the deep
mid-off boundary.
Morrison continued to make light of the
conditions with shots to all parts of the
ground, supported by brother Ian, Jamie
Mathews and Jason Stokes before falling in
the last over for one of the best knocks of
his playing career.
Bangor were always going to struggle to
reach the Waringstown total and were not
helped by the early loss of openers David
McCusker and Michael Harte within the first
eight overs. The Waringstown bowlers stuck
to their task with the ever reliable Jason
Stokes claiming some vital wickets in
claiming three for 55 and Alan Kennedy
(2-25) was the pick of the bowlers,
restricting Bangor to 241 fo nine in their
50 overs.
The victory keeps Waringstown on top of the
table and two more victories could earn them
the Division Two Section One crown for the
first time.

LEE Nelson smashed an amazing 190 as
Waringstown thrashed Downpatrick by 140 runs
at The Meadow last Thursday to win the under
17 Colts Cup for a second successive year.
Nelson smashed 12 fours and 12 sixes in an
innings that took just 111 balls.
Waringstown rattled up a remarkable 238 for
one in their 30 overs, with Nelson and Keith
Allen sharing an unbroken second wicket
stand of 210, of which Allen managed an
unbeaten 24.
Ross Boultwood, who plays his senior
cricket with CIYMS, was the pick of the
Downpatrick bowlers, conceding just 14 from
his six overs.
The cup holders had more than enough runs on
the board and Downpatrick’s reply was soon
in tatters as they were reduced to 27 for
six, with Matthew Allen, the highly-rated
seam bowler, claiming two for six.
Allen bowled with real pace, troubling the
Downpatrick top order and underlining his
huge potential.
Nelson got in on the act by claiming three
wickets for two runs and Josh Hall, younger
brother of Ireland international James,
claimed three for 13 and spinner Stephen
Allen two for 12.
Downpatrick were eventually dismissed for
just 98 in 28.5 overs, leaving Waringstown
winners by 140 runs.
Nelson will no doubt get all the headlines
after his record-breaking feat but this is
an impressive young Waringstown team.
However, the task for a talented group of
players is to follow in Nelson’s footsteps
and aim to break into the Waringstown senior
team within the next few years.
